Where we are

November 2008

ACTIVITIES IN ACTION:

1. Networked Politics and Technology seminar at the Bay Area in 5, 6 and 7 of December 2008.
The seminar will begin on the Friday night with a public event in San Francisco. We are pleased that this is being organised jointly with the Global Commons Foundation. The theme of the public meeting will be ‘Movement Organizing and Networked Politics: The experience of the Social Forums.’

As with all Networked Politics seminars, the method is conversational and flexible – to be maximally creative, improvising on a structure!

Also we are preparing a ‘reader’ for the seminar to help us all prepare for the discussion. But we welcome all contributions or recommendations for background reading. We are aiming to bring together at least the first collection of readings by Thanksgiving on 25^th . Please send any recommendations or readings of your own by 20^th to Hilary at _hilary1@manc.org

The reader will be organized according to the main themes of the seminar:
* First line of discussion: Governance of platforms for participation: Social forum and online collaborative communities
* Second line of discussion: When do new social media and political activism converge/match?
* Third line of discussion: New institutions: the rediscovery of the commons.
* Fourth line of discussion (the theme of the public meeting) Movement Organizing and Networked Politics: The experience of the Social Forums

The School of Information at UC Berkeley are kindly hosting the seminar (102 South Hall, Berkeley, CA 94720-4600 More details see http://www.ischool.berkeley.edu/contactus). The seminar is sponsored by the Department of International Computer Science Institute and the Global Commons Foundation.
